Growing Squares

This is a 1 centimeter × 1 centimeter square. What is its area?

Add square centimeters until the figure is a 2 centimeter × 2 centimeter square. What is its area?

Use tiles or cubes to build larger and larger squares, 3 × 3, then 4 × 4, and so forth. Figure out how the area changes as the square grows.
